The Ethical Nature of our Beef Bone Broth and Extracts . . .

A sustainable society . . .

Environmental issues are very important to a lot of todays’ consumers.  The sustainability and ethical nature of bone broth fits well with these values.  So how is bone broth sustainable and ethical?

A definition of a sustainable society is “one that lives within the capacity of its natural and social system. It has a system of rules and incentives that promote replenishing and limit depletion and pollution.” (Source:  Ethical aspects of nature – Center for Humans and Nature)

In New Zealand we have some of the world’s strictest animal welfare practices, our non-GMO status is both a legal and ethical stand, and the manufacture of beef bone broths and extracts contributes to the reduction of waste.

In the past animal bones would be used as petfood, fertiliser, gelatin or considered as waste.  The increase in popularity of bone broth internationally makes use of animal bones in an ethical and sustainable way by reducing this waste and bringing nourishment to consumers.

At Taranaki Bio Extracts we believe in sustainable and ethical nutrition – for us this is about valuing, and creating value from the entire animal, to create rich nutrition.  Both historically, and for many cultures, respecting the life of animals sourced for food means using and appreciating every part.  The modern term is ‘nose to tail’ eating.  For twenty years we’ve been part of this age-old tradition.  When the processors have removed the prime cuts, we know there’s special value and richness hidden in the meaty beef bones.   For many ethically minded consumers it makes sense to use the whole animal.  For these consumers if an animal is to be slaughtered for our consumption of meat it’s not ethical or economical to waste the rest.

Animal welfare is an ethical issue and a high priority in New Zealand.  New Zealand’s strict biosecurity and quality control processes, and geographic isolation have resulted in an animal disease-free status recognised by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

Our raw materials are ethically sourced – this means our meaty beef bones come from farms and meat processors that comply under the New Zealand Animal Welfare legislation.

New Zealand cattle are raised free-range 365 days a year on a pasture-based diet. This pasture-based farming helps our animals stay healthy and reflects their ethical and humane treatment.

The release of GMOs into the environment has the potential to cause ecological damage and is viewed by many as an ethical issue.  Our products are GMO free – 100% natural.  When it comes to genetic modification, our crops are safe.  No genetically modified crops can be grown in New Zealand – it’s against the law.

For us a healthy eco-system is a good part of our responsibility – it’s all about how we relate to our natural environment.  As a New Zealand manufacturer and exporter, this extends from our relationship with the land and animal welfare practices, to the way we do business, and the products that result.  New Zealand farmers lead the way, playing a key role in regenerating the environment.  They operate 100% pasture-fed systems helping sequester carbon into the soil, and partner with local government on water quality and bio-diversity improvement programmes.

Ends.
